Using Carrier Oils

Mix an essential oil with a good carrier oil, such as almond or coconut, at the time of application to lessen the risk of skin sensitivity and to cover a wider area. Apply to the area of concern or the feet, ears, or wrists for quick absorption.

The moment you mix an essential oil with a carrier oil, such as almond, the molecular structure of the essential oil begins to break down and the therapeutic properties begin to diminish. To prevent this, we suggest that you mix them just before using. If you really want essential oils mixed in a carrier oil, such as in a roll on bottle, plan to use it up soon.

Sweet Almond Oil (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis)

You'll love this oil for its wonderful feel. It is one of the most popular with massage therapists. Your friends and family will love almond oil too! It absorbs into the skin faster than other fixed oils. This means that it will go the deepest into the tissues of the skin and leave less mess on your clothes and sheets.

Coconut Oil Fractions (Triglycerides of Caprylic-Capric Acid)

This oil has very little aroma (not like regular coconut oil) and is clear so it doesn't generally stain fabrics. It absorbs into the skin very quickly and doesn't leave you with a greasy feeling.

This mixture is an esterification of coconut oil fatty acids and glycerin. It is also called Fractionated or Light Coconut Oil. This is different from whole coconut oil, which is solid at room temperature.

"All carrier oils consist of a class of molecules called fatty acid triglycerides, which means they contain three, long-chain fatty ester groups. Most all plant derived carrier oils consist entirely of what are called "unsaturated" fatty acid triglycerides and their long fatty ester side chains are typically 16 to 20+ carbon units long. The double bonds in these side chains are susceptible to oxidation over time. Their reaction with oxygen is what produces the rancid odor that you may have noticed in your carrier oils when they get old. Whole coconut oil also has some quite long unsaturated fatty acid triglycerides (which is why it is a solid at room temperature). But the coconut oil is special in that it has a relatively high percentage of shorter length (C8, C10), completely saturated (no double bonds) triglycerides. These smaller fatty acid triglycerides are separated from the whole coconut oil to make Fractionated Coconut Oil. The separation process involves a simple physical separation, so there are no chemical residues."   ~  Butterfly Express April 2007 Newsletter
